When Is the Next Public Holiday in Australia?

As of 20 August 2026. Because « the next public holiday » depends entirely on which state or territory you’re in and what today’s date is, there’s no single national answer — here’s exactly what’s coming up next in each one, sourced from Dayvessa’s own verified 2026 public holiday data.

Next public holiday by state, as of 20 August 2026
State/territory Next public holiday Date Days away
New South Wales Labour Day Mon 5 October 46
Victoria Friday before the AFL Grand Final Fri 25 September 36
Queensland King’s Birthday Mon 5 October 46
Western Australia King’s Birthday Mon 28 September 39
South Australia Labour Day Mon 5 October 46
Tasmania Burnie Show (regional) Fri 2 October 43
ACT Labour Day Mon 5 October 46
Northern Territory Christmas Eve (part-day, 7pm–midnight) Thu 24 December 126

Two rows need a note rather than a plain date:

  • Tasmania’s next holiday, Burnie Show, is regional — gazetted for the municipal areas of Burnie, Waratah-Wynyard and West Coast only, not statewide. If you’re elsewhere in Tasmania, your actual next public holiday is Christmas Day.
  • The Northern Territory’s next holiday is a part-day entitlement, not a full day off (Christmas Eve, 7pm to midnight only) — its next full public holiday is Christmas Day itself, Friday 25 December.

Why the gap looks so different by state

Notice the Northern Territory’s wait is nearly three times longer than everywhere else’s. That’s not a data gap — the NT simply doesn’t have a public holiday between its Show Day season (which wraps up in mid-August) and Christmas Eve, while every other state and territory has at least one holiday somewhere in September or October (King’s Birthday, Labour Day, or a state-specific day). It’s a genuine, verified difference in how the calendar falls this particular year, not an oversight.
